The Covid-19 pandemic is having an enormous adverse effect on the global performing arts industry.  We are acutely aware of the lost wages and careers that musicians across the planet are facing and are empathetic to the injury the ‘gagging’ of live music performance is having on the morale of an entire workforce.  Of particular anxiety and fear are with young musicians, such as our competition laureates and competitors, who now face an entirely unknown future.

With no firm date framework about when New Zealand’s borders will be open to international visitors, the board of the MHIVC Charitable Trust made the responsible but regrettable decision to cancel the 2021 Michael Hill International Violin Competition which was to have marked our 20th anniversary.  We hope and are working towards presenting an international violin competition event in 2022 celebrating our 21st birthday instead, pending sufficient funding and sponsorship confidence.
